Set Ready Film

Bringing writers, directors, DPs, actors & crew together

About

See a scene from many perspectives - practice craft - get set ready.

Set Ready Film is a regular filmmaking workshop held in Canberra, ACT and remotely since 2021.

It's designed to provide a low pressure space for filmmakers to develop their craft and build community. It also provides a unique opportunity for writers to showcase and develop new work.

Opportunities to develop as a screen practitioner can be limited for people who lack access, proximity or privilege.

And these truths remain:

  • Whether you're in a creative or technical role, screen craft is developed through practice: the adage '10,000 hours' of making are recognised as the foundation.

  • Filmmaking is highly collaborative and emerging practitioners need the chance to practice this skill, and to learn the language of their future collaborators.

At each event, teams workshop a scene from new work in development by a screenwriter. The scene is filmed in one afternoon and then teams share their work, and discuss the scene with the writer.

Screen practitioners at all levels are encouraged to try a new role, share knowledge, or simply build their skills through practice: from writing to directing, acting and cinematography.

Screenwriters get to see their work 'walking and talking'

Screenwriting is a solitary endeavour and writers often work alone with limited feedback from friends, other writers, paid script coverage and producers.

  •  Just as playwrights develop a work through readings and in collaboration with actors -  screen writers and screenplays need this critical step. It can be hard for writers to organise this.

  • Screenwriting is dramatic writing: and has the added dimension of screen language. In such a highly visual medium, writers need to know how to crate a story that heads of department and crew can understand and translate to screen for an audience.

  • So actors and filmmakers can give unique and often valuable feedback, simply by interpreting new work. (Or, if invited direct feedback on elements of the script.)

  • The chance to do this before a script is sent to producers, or before cameras officially roll - to hear the words spoken and to see it translated to screen is invaluable; and yet rarely happens.
